Please read if you are thinking of adopting a dog or pup from us.
We have been overwhelmed by the numbers of inquiries and applications we receive once a pup becomes available for adoption. Within minutes our inbox is filling up with applications for the ONE puppy! Our procedure has always been to process applications on a first come/first served basis. It is the only way to guarantee fairness. Our application process remains the same as always with admin approval, reference checks, home visits etc. and we are not changing the process because of the increase in demand for puppies! Just because someone is the first applicant, does not necessarily mean they will be approved. We accept several applications for each dog/pup and then we STOP ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS.
We understand the frustration involved for people trying to adopt a new family member and not having their applications accepted because we have received so many already. It is frustrating to our volunteers as well to have to pass on bad news to people who are hoping to adopt.
Please understand that our volunteers are all doing their best to answer inquiries and process applications in a timely and thorough manner. Thank you!

MASR would like everyone to know that we take pandemic concerns very seriously. We follow all current public health orders and expect the same from any interested applicants. While we wish to stick with our long established policies regarding adoption applications, we have adapted some of our procedures to insure that safety for all is always our priority.
Thank you all for your continued support and understanding during these tough times. Stay well everyone!

PLEASE do some research about dogs in general and German Shepherds in particular before deciding you want one. All puppies are cute and lovable but if you don't understand the history & purpose of the breed, you won't be prepared for the reality of a German Shepherd or Shepherd cross pup. They are known worldwide for their unmatched loyalty, their endless courage and stamina, and their devotion to their family. BUT they are a remarkably intelligent dog that require a calm consistent leader to teach them manners and we have to EARN that loyalty we all desire. German Shepherds are a member of the Herding Group. Their original purpose was to provide protection to herds of sheep. They are naturally protective and also driven to "herd". As puppies, they are rough, very high drive, nipping little alligators. Chasing anything is FUN and many Shepherds are "prey" driven which means, cats and rabbits and birds are all "fair game" to your puppy. You MUST be prepared to accept the challenge that a Shepherd or Shepherd cross pup will provide you with or please don't apply for one. A dog should be for LIFE, and all family members should be onboard with expectations of acceptable behavior and responsibility. We can offer guidance and direction but be prepared to engage the support of a professional trainer if you are new to owning a Shepherd or Shepherd cross pup or adult. The amount of effort a person puts into any dog or pup will determine the outcome of owning one of these amazing animals.
Important information about our spay/neuter policy.
Today I am sharing an important post for anyone who is considering adopting a dog or puppy from us. We are a rescue which means that 1) every single one of us are volunteers and that 2) every single one of us care deeply about each and every animal that crosses our path. We aren't the biggest or best known rescue, we aren't even the longest in operation here in Manitoba, although we are close. But we have been donating our time, our efforts, our knowledge for almost 16 years now. It's a LOT of work but it is worth it for the hundreds and hundreds of dogs we have helped. We believe in the value of EVERY SINGLE dog, this is not a numbers game or a competition. From the moment we say "yes, we can help", until the moment a dog goes to his/her forever home, we devote everything we have to that individual dog or puppy. We feed only good quality food and we provide top-notch veterinary care, regardless of our current bank account. We provide full vaccinations and heartworm protection and everything else that pops up. Our foster homes and forever homes are checked thoroughly. And we provide extensive detailed information to our fosters and our adopters. Basically we do everything we know in order to offer the very best care we can to each and every dog we meet, FOREVER.
Having said all that, there is one area that we know we can improve on and that is delaying all spays and neuters until after a dog or puppy has reached maturity. The research supporting this has been available for decades, this is nothing new. The hormones responsible for many things important to the health and development of dogs are lost once the animal has been altered. These hormones play such an important part in the overall wellbeing of each and every dog. (I don't need to go into all the details - if you are interested, there is a huge amount of information online.) Being a rescue though means that we are expected to alter everything, and we certainly do and always have. But we alter at a date chosen to give the dog the best possible opportunity to develop properly. Our contract currently states that we will schedule altering after 7 months for females and 10 months for males, but we are changing this, effective immediately. We are scheduling all dogs now for dates after they have reached their one year birthday.
What does this mean for you, our future adopters? Well, it means that if you adopt a female pup from us, chances are that she may have a heat cycle before she is spayed. If you aren't willing to "deal with" a heat cycle, don't adopt a female. It's a normal part of maturing for all females, and it is a question of making certain sacrifices for approximately 3 weeks THAT WILL BENEFIT YOUR DOG FOR THE REMAINDER OF HER LIFE. Simple really. Same with males. Male dogs may typically mark things... again, perfectly normal dog behavior. If you can't bear to have a dog mark things, don't adopt a male (some females mark as well but most often it is males). If you aren't willing to teach your male dog what is appropriate marking (trees) versus what is not appropriate (furniture), don't adopt a male. We have been pushing this information since the day we started and have delayed spays and neuters for as long as possible with our adopters. Nothing really has changed except that we are now making it official that the one year mark is our new minimum age. This will hopefully be a deterrent to adopters who wish for Fido to never fully mature. Our Fidos certainly will. We are not worried about accidental litters. To date we have not had even one "whoops" litter in any of our dogs. Because there really is no need or excuse for an unwanted pregnancy if you adopt to responsible people. And we will all continue to work hard to insure that our dogs only go to responsible, loving, committed homes.
We are hoping that people committed to the individual health and wellbeing of each and every dog, whether purebred champion or rescued stray recognize this as a step in the right direction for the overall health and longevity of every single pup. Thank you to everyone who recognizes this post for what it is - a rescue comprised of people who genuinely care, not just for today but for all days.

From the beginning, 16 years ago, our commitment to each and every dog has remained the same. To get them into our care where they are safe. To provide them with the best we can offer in nutrition, the best we can offer in veterinary care, providing them each with guidance, boundaries and structure. This is a basic necessity for all dogs but especially important for the previously unwanted, the fearful, the abused and/or neglected. And love. The love poured into our dogs by our amazing foster families has helped many a dog forget their less than ideal past.
Beautiful Rex didn't have a great start. And his life went from bad to worse when his owner passed away. Rex was an outdoor dog, living his entire life on one small plot of land. Never went anywhere and never exposed to so many things we all take for granted. Not abused physically but never socialized, never played with, never kept company on cold winter nights. He was just "there". After his owner died, extended family tried to help and brought Rex to Winnipeg. That didn't work out well - Rex went from a life of basic isolation to a busy home with multiple people, multiple other dogs/pets, etc. We were contacted because it was not working well at all and poor Rex had nowhere or nobody left to go to. We placed Rex into a quiet foster home with a young couple and one happy, balanced female dog. We started medical care immediately. Rex's transition was slow and filled with many ups and downs. Medically he was suffering from multiple ailments. Stress had him self mutilating and fear had him biting. But we didn't give up. Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and now, almost a year later, here is our beautiful boy. No longer stressed and harming himself, no longer snapping out as a method of feeling safe. Rex has learned the joy and safety of being part of a family. He understands play now. He knows the comfort of a soft sofa to lay old tired bones on.
Rex is a senior dog and because he still has medical issues and dietary restrictions, and mainly because he deserves to live the rest of his life where he knows he is loved, we decided that Rex will remain one of MASR's permanent foster dogs. He will remain for the rest of his days, however long that may be, with his foster family who he has grown to love and cherish.
Rescue is so much more than a verb. It is a promise and we intend to always keep our promises to these deserving creatures.

Our beautiful Gracie just continues to impress us with the progress she has made and continues to make daily.
This amazing dog has been exposed to so much in the short while we have had her....she has had to learn to live in a house, enter & accept a crate, meet other dogs/animals, walk on a leash (without dragging her foster mom behind), go for car rides, etc. and, while she is still a work-in-progress, she has risen to the many challenges!
Good girl Gracie!
Gracie is still looking for her own forever family. If you would like to meet her, please complete our online adoption application at:

CAESAR
Beautiful Caesar is a 4-year-old purebred male German Shepherd. This beautiful boy was lacking in manners but his training and socialization are going very well. He is happy and friendly and once we deem him ready for adoption, he will make someone an amazing best friend. Caesar is not yet available for adoption and we are not accepting applications for him at this time. |
Caesar is alive and in our care now. ONLY because a dedicated foster home stepped up and SAVED HIS LIFE.
He is sweet and happy. But he is "mouthy" and uses his mouth to grab your hand when he is excited. This is a simple matter of training and he is far from our first mouthy dog. However, because of this, he was scheduled for euthanasia on Monday. Thankfully his plight & our post gained the right person's attention and Caesar is alive and now able to get a second chance.
We, like most other rescues and shelters, rely on foster homes to house our precious "inventory". Our hands are tied without somewhere to put these beautiful souls, no matter how desperate their situation may be. We stand by helplessly, knowing the poor dog's fate if we can't help. We can't put our "inventory" on shelves while we wait for someone (anyone) to step up. And every day we shed more tears and become more battle weary. The heartbreak wears us down, the multiple excuses we hear wear us down, the lack of funds wear us down, the never-ending requests for help wear us down and the never-ending begging for foster homes certainly wears us down.
We are at war people. We are fighting the irresponsible owners who believe that pets are 'disposable'. The abusers who believe that animals have no feelings and treat them horrifically. The people who give no thought to the responsibilities of pet ownership and dump them without thought, "forget" to feed them, "forget" to alter them, "forget" to remove their collar as they grow... the ones who run over them with their car and leave them to suffer in the road or ditch. The ones who think a moving animal makes for good target practice. We are at war with the backyard "breeders" (and Manitoba is full of them) that pump out whatever the market will bear with zero concern for the lives of the creatures they produce. As long as somebody comes along with enough cash, the pup is theirs. And naturally we are at war with the people who continue, IN SPITE OF ALL THE INFORMATION AVAILABLE to support those "greeders"! (And some even have the audacity to claim that they "rescued" their expensive backyard bred/puppy mill bred dog or pup!)
But our biggest enemy these days is apathy. Have people become immune to the suffering of the innocents? We have been in existence since 2006 and have been responsible for helping more dogs and pups than I can count. I myself have witnessed horrors that are the stuff of nightmares. I have cried myself to sleep more nights than I care to count. I have raged at the world, raged at people, raged at the cruelty that I have witnessed. But not once have I stopped caring. BUT if we can't continue to recruit others that also CARE, how can we exist?
I felt uncomfortable putting it out publicly that Caesar would DIE if a foster home didn't step up. I felt uncomfortable sharing the information that his littermate is now DEAD. I don't blame anyone in particular for the death but I do blame everyone that just "didn't care".
PLEASE give some thought to fostering. It costs you nothing and the rewards are huge. You are honestly saving a life. You get to be a real genuine HERO for a dog (or dogs) that are desperately needing help. Basically I am begging for people to care. We have several dogs waiting, their lives are quite literally in your hands.

We wonder how many people actually realize the sad reality for the dogs that we (and others) are unable to help because we have a shortage of committed foster homes.
Do people even realize (or care) that the poor dogs oftentimes suffer an untimely end? I am not sure but what I AM sure of is the tears we all shed, the frustrations we all feel, the heartache we all experience when a dog we are trying to help is 'gone'.
"Sorry, he ran away",
"Sorry, he was hit by a car",
"Sorry, he was shot",
"Sorry, he was killed by other dogs",
"Sorry, he was euthanized"....
Why must this continue to happen? Why do we and other equally dedicated people have to continue to experience this heartbreak? Many of us have devoted our lives to making a difference for animals in need. And we have found joy in knowing the difference that we have made and continue to make. But we can ONLY help deserving dogs when we have equally committed foster homes!

Welcome to MASR Zeus! ❤
Beautiful Zeus is a 2-year-old male German Shepherd. Zeus came into our care after his owner suffered from a situation where he could no longer care for Zeus, and had exhausted all of his resources.
Zeus is exhibiting some stress and anxiety with strangers but has settled nicely into his foster home. We will continue to work with Zeus to help him overcome his anxiety and rebuild his confidence, and allow him to be the wonderful companion he is meant to be.
Zeus is not available for adoption at this time and we are not accepting adoption applications for him yet.

Our adorable KNEESA has been in our care for 14 months now.
She has attracted a couple of potential adopters but nothing worked out,
she is still waiting for her forever family.
Kneesa is a wonderful 14 month old pup! Very bright with an easy going personality, Kneesa loves everyone. She gets along great with other dogs and wants to play with her foster family's cats.
Here is what her foster mom has to say:
"Kneesa is a smart, high energy lovable goof. Her favourite games are keep away, tug and food puzzles. She will eat almost anything, except for broccoli. When you are greeted by her and her excited butt wiggles the happiness is contagious. She needs about two hours of a mix of both mental and physical exercise. Don’t let her goofiness fool you, she is super smart! She has figured out how we open doors, and how to close a kennel door on her foster siblings. She knows sit, no (ack), down, wait, shake a paw, right, left, centre (through the legs), walks well and knows leash pressure. You can put treats on her paws and make her wait until you give the command “break”. She is familiar with door monster and knows to wait until you say “break” before walking through a doorway. She has a lot of speed, with skills in turns, weaving and spatial awareness and would thrive in agility courses. She is in her teenage years, so will try and push her boundaries. But with reinforcement of basics she is fairly well behaved. The raptor years won’t last much longer! After a good hard day of work, she loves to cuddle, get belly and butt scrootches and chew on a antler. There is no such thing as personal space because she just wants to constantly be around you when you are home and will sneak in face kisses. She is fully potty trained and if you don’t pay attention she will grab your shoe and bring it to you to let you know she wants outside. She is fully kennel trained and can last a day of work in the kennel, but be prepared for all that energy! She loves taking casual walks and catching up on all the local gossip by sniffing. She loves to play and eat snow. She enjoys chasing the water hose and splashing around in kiddie pools. It’s impossible not to be happy when you are loved by her. She will bring lots of joy and love to which ever family is lucky to have her."

Meet Beautiful Chrissy!
Chrissy is a spayed female Shepherd cross pup who just turned 2 years old.
Chrissy has now been in our care for one year and is patiently waiting for a family of her own.
Weighing in at 62 pounds, Chrissy has been described as "fun sized". Chrissy was originally from a rural area where she was found as a wee baby, fending for herself. Loved and cared for during her first 12 months of life, her owner surrendered Chrissy to us to offer her a better life.
Chrissy is house and crate trained, walks well on a leash, sits, shakes a paw and has good recall.
She gets along well with most male dogs after a suitable introduction.
Chrissy would make a wonderful companion for some lucky person or family. She is slightly reserved with strangers but very loving and affectionate with her people.
She has a high prey drive so a home without young children or small pets would be best.
If you would like to meet this wonderful young girl, please complete our online application at:

From Rags to Riches
Beautiful senior boy Rex, our current FOREVER FOSTER. Came into our care as a badly "broken" boy with too many health and behavioral issues to list, including anxiety driven self-mutilation and fear driven aggression.
Placed into a loving foster home with a four-legged "sister" to show him the ropes and patient, dedicated foster "mom" & "dad", and look at him now doing a treat search! He has been a great "big brother" to another fostered puppy, he has travelled on a family vacation meeting extended family and learned the joys that can bring.
Rex is now living and loving life.
NEVER give up!

We are in URGENT need of foster homes for dogs and puppies!
We need people committed to helping dogs in need.
Fostering costs you nothing but your time and desire to make a difference. We provide all food & supplies and every dog in our care receives full veterinary attention from our wonderful veterinary team at Plessis Veterinary Hospital.
We need more foster homes for us to continue to help dogs. EVERY DAY the requests come in, and often our ability to quickly find a foster home will determine the fate of the dog or pup.
We offer an amazing group of people available to help every new foster, and we are all dedicated to the wellbeing of each and every animal in our care.
We always need a variety of foster homes!
* Homes with children, as well as homes without children.
* Homes with other dogs and/or pets, as well as homes without dogs/ other pets.
* Homes with training & behavior expertise, as well as people new to dogs.
The only prerequisite we have is your ability to provide a caring & safe environment for your foster dog or pup.

Our forever foster boy Rex!
Rex came into our care last March after his Saskatchewan owner passed away. Rex had been an outside dog for his entire 8 years of life and once his owner passed away, he was basically alone outside for two long stressful months, waiting for his "Dad" to return. Finally, extended family made the trip from Winnipeg and picked him up, hoping to integrate him into their family. Unfortunately the family's other four-legged residents and Rex couldn't get along and we were contacted to help. We knew that placing this boy would prove challenging. He suffered from multiple physical and emotional ailments. His entire "world" had been a farmyard and one person. He had no exposure to so many things we all take for granted. Travel, televisions, kettles, phones, other dogs, children, other people, period. We placed him in a very committed foster home where his anxiety induced behavior certainly caused some challenges. But this foster family never gave up on Rex and neither did we. Several vet visits, special veterinary diet, then homemade diet, multiple medications and supplements, and LOTS of love & patience. Exposure to new things, always in a calm and safe manner. A "bestie" female Keeshond who showed Rex the ropes. And toys! LOTS of toys! For a dog who had no idea of what a toy was, Rex sure discovered the joy a simple toy can provide. Look at him now. No more self-mutilation, no more fear induced biting... just a happy healthy dog enjoying his life!
Rex isn't our first "forever foster" and may not be our last, there really is no way to know. What we do know though is that whatever it takes, our amazing team of heroes just keeps on giving these wonderful creatures their second chance. One special dog at a time.
